Dear Reader,

Welcome to the August edition of the Loquendo Newsletter, rich in Articles, Interviews, Success Stories, New Product Releases and much more. In the last three months, numerous interesting developments have demonstrated Loquendo’s commitment to the market and its partners and customers, including the opening of our new offices on 5th Avenue, New York, in response to increased growth in the North American market. On the product front, Loquendo MRCP Server (see article) received Customer Interaction Solutions (TMC) magazine’s 2008 IP Contact Center Technology Pioneer Award and Loquendo TTS 7.5 was also released. This includes a revamped prompt-authoring suite – TTS Director (see article), bursting with new features, which will be showcased on August 19th at SpeechTEK.

In Partnership News you will find many success stories which testify to Loquendo’s established leadership in voice-enabling anything, from GPS navigation devices to contact centers in the financial sector, and talking avatars; as well as Loquendo’s pioneering role in new emerging fields such as voice-controlled domestic appliances.

The Multimodal Interaction Working Group (MMIWG) has published the First Public Working Group Note of "Authoring Applications for the Multimodal Architecture".

Last Call Working Draft of SSML 1.1 Published
June 20, 2008
The Voice Browser Working Group (VBWG) has released the Last Call Working Draft of Speech Synthesis Markup Language (SSML) Version 1.1. SSML 1.0 provides an XML-based markup language for assisting the generation of synthetic speech in Web and other applications.
SSML 1.1 improves on W3C's SSML 1.0 by adding support for additional conventions and practices for world languages including Asian, Eastern European, and Middle Eastern languages.

Summaries of W3C VB and MMI Meetings at DFKI in Saarbruecken
June 9-13, 2008
In June, the VBWG and MMIWG met in Saarbruecken hosted by the DFKI research institute for a week of work on the specifications under development.

The major topics under discussion were: review of progress towards a preliminary draft of VoiceXML 3.0 specification ( VBWG); finalisation of the next working draft of MMI architecture specification and MMI authoring (MMIWG).
Public reports are now available for the VBWG meeting, and for MMIWG meeting.

The Workshop on Spoken Language Understanding and Dialogue Systems, organized by LUNA and DICIT EU funded projects was held at IIS 2008. It was an opportunity to share ideas on problems related to communication with computer systems in natural language and dialogue systems.
