Loquendo Newsletter July 2007
July 2007

Foreword

Dear Reader,

Welcome to the new edition of the Loquendo Newsletter, featuring a selection of news and articles to keep you abreast of the latest in speech technology and to learn about Loquendo's activities over the last few months.

This edition coincides with the expansion of Loquendo's Sales force to consist of two divisions dedicated to the Italian market and International market respectively, to promote Loquendo's core products and solutions, and a third new area, Government Intelligence Solutions, which will oversee security technology such as Speaker Identification and biometrics. A new Marketing and Business Development department will operate marketing activities worldwide, and co-ordinate partnerships and OEMs for embedded technology. The expansion consolidates a strong team of dedicated sales staff representing Loquendo across Europe, North and South America, now expanding to the Middle and Far East, and signals Loquendo's increasingly strong presence in the global speech technology markets.

On a different note, we are pleased to announce the W3C's completion of two new standards: VoiceXML 2.1 and SISR 1.0 (Semantic Interpretation for Speech Recognition). See our Standards Corner for more details on this important development. The newsletter's in-depth article explores and clarifies the advantages that standards bring to the speech market.

You will also find Loquendo's most recent partnership and product news, as well as updates on the many international co-operation projects that Loquendo is actively involved in. The special feature for this edition is the DIVINES project, which came to a successful conclusion earlier this year.

The events calendar is particularly busy over August and September, starting with SpeechTEK 2007 in New York, 20-23 August. Loquendo will take part in the conference with several speeches, offering attendees a rich overview of the cutting edge of speech technology alongside impressive live demos. Loquendo will also be at the SpeechTEK 2007 exposition, so come and try out Loquendo technology at Booth #509. Loquendo will also be an active participant at Interspeech 2007 in Antwerp, Belgium from August 27-31, where we will be demonstrating a selection of innovations developed for the HIWIRE project and giving presentations on Speaker Verification and speech synthesis in noisy environments. We will also be at the Canalys Navigation Forum 2007 in Barcelona, September 10-12, followed by Call Centre Expo 2007 in Birmingham, UK, September 26-27.

We hope to see you there!

IN-DEPTH

Loquendo would like to take this opportunity to applaud the efforts of the W3C, which recently published new standards that enhance the capabilities and interoperability of voice browsers and speech recognition systems. The W3C Voice Browser Working Group has completed work on both VoiceXML 2.1 and Semantic Interpretation for Speech Recognition (SISR) 1.0, two critical pieces of W3C's Speech Interface Framework.
This article describes the context in which these specifications were created and provides a description of the benefits they offer to the speech application market.

R&D COLLABORATIONS

  • Loquendo ASR R&D in DIVINES IST project - Diagnostic and Intrinsic Variabilities in Natural Speech
In January 2007, the three year FP6 DIVINES project was successfully concluded, creating new acoustic-modelling and lexical modelling techniques as an alternative to current approaches. The project made significant contributions to the long-term goal of bridging the gap in speech recognition performance between human and machine.
The techniques developed by the project achieved an improved capacity to handle the variability and non-stationarity that is intrinsic in speech: first, by using more appropriate adapted models (both acoustic and lexical) to improve voice recognition, and second, by accurate characterization of the phenomenon allowing the design of more robust or adaptable features/models and hence improvements in recognition accuracy.
The consortium involved major European research centres, University departments and enterprises from Belgium, France, Germany and Italy, as well as leading voice technology R&D departments. It was composed of 8 partners: MULTITEL (Belgium), France Telecom (France), Carl von Ossietzky Universitaet Oldenburg (Germany), Babel Technologies S.A.(Belgium), Loquendo (Italy), Université d'Avignon et du Pays-vaucluse (France), Institut Eurecom - France, Politecnico di Torino (Italy).

    August 31, 2007
The speech synthesis R&D group will present some results regarding the new features developed to enhance synthetic speech in noisy environments. This work was undertaken within the SHARE project whose goal is to develop a multimodal communication system supporting rescue operations and disaster management. Signal processing features like dynamic range control, gain and speech rate control were considered to enhance speech signals in outdoor and noisy environments. To this end, a particular configuration for controlling the signal dynamic has been investigated and assessed by means of subjective perceptual tests.

The paper "Speech Synthesis enhancement in noisy environments" by Davide Bonardo(Loquendo) and Enrico Zovato (Loquendo) will be presented at Interspeech 2007 in the poster session "Speech Synthesis II" on August 31, 2007 (13:30-15:30).
