Welcome to the new issue of Loquendo's Newsletter! This month, you will find an article on the recently released version of the Loquendo embedded TTS for the Symbian OS™, which adds an impressive number of new features that allow the development of a brand new set of services for the mobile and small device world.

To enrich its product portfolio and expand its application fields, Loquendo has recently released a version of its embedded TTS for Symbian OS™. This new product brings along a set of unique features, which have never been available on a mobile phone before. These impressive features will permit developers to create a brand new set of services, such as SMS and email reading and many more applications that can benefit from vocal output.

The Symbian OS™ version of the speech synthesis technology increases the span of the Loquendo product line, which is now available for servers, desktop, multimedia, PDAs and smartphones, allowing widespread exploitation in the mass market.

This paper presents an overview of the new technology provided by Loquendo, including an analysis on possible market applications and benefits for the end users.

OPPORTUNITIES for R&D COLLABORATIONS

On May 18th, the European Commission has opened a new Call for Proposals for submitting Research and Development projects to be funded within the specific priority of Information Society Technologies (IST). This is the fifth call within the 6th framework program for "Integrating and strengthening the European research area" launched by the EU in 2002. The call has a total indicative budget of more than 600 million Euros to be assigned to the most promising and innovative projects that will be submitted by the 21st of September (see the European IST homepage).

Loquendo is interested in exploring new, stimulating and innovative research ideas involving voice technologies in any application field, together with its partners, clients, academic institutions and other interested parties, to be presented for the upcoming call. The strategic objectives of call 5 that could involve research in voice technologies and applications are: Multimodal Interfaces, Collaborative Working Environments, eInclusion, Access to and Preservation of Cultural Heritage, as well as ICT for Networked Businesses.

Loquendo, with its long tradition in advanced research activities and strong commitment in creating innovation in the voice market, has an outstanding history of successful R&D projects that have been approved and funded by the European Commission in the last years. Currently Loquendo is involved in five FP6 projects awarded in the previous calls. To support its expanding presence in the worldwide speech market, Loquendo is looking for highly skilled candidates to fill a number of open international sales positions.
Successful candidates holding proven sales experience will be responsible for creating new business relationships with partners and systems integrators in North & South America, France, the Netherlands, South Africa, Spain , Sweden and the U.K.
It is preferable that the experience be specifically related to products such as Text-to-Speech (TTS), Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) and other speech technologies applications and solutions.
